The event will give tribute to the thousands of donors and volunteers worldwide who have kept the vision alive by providing financial, material and human support to Gawad Kalinga in its goal to alleviate poverty in the Philippines by building homes for the poor. Together with the housing component comes a full complement of services that includes education for their children, livelihood opportunities for adults, and health and social services for the entire family. The GK Greatness Series featuring the former president as principal speaker comes to Winnipeg as part of a 3-city promotion that aims to raise more than $5 million from pledges and donations for Gawad Kalinga. Former President Ramos will be traveling to Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver from October 22-29 to personally make an appeal for financial support to Gawad Kalinga. Accompanying the former president are Mrs. Meng Ramos, Mae Gaffud, Arlene Juele and Tony Meloto, GK founder. As of press time, the following have signed up to be table sponsors at the GK Heroes Night: NDP Caucus, PC Caucus, Larry Vickar, Bill Balacko, Don Young, Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Primerica, Dr. Gilbert Miranda, University of Winnipeg Students Association, and Dr. Tom Colina. Also expected to attend are Premier Gary Doer, Charito Drinkwalter, Filipina city councilor from Kenora, Dr. Jon Gerrard, Hon. Consul Edda Pangilinan, Janice Hamilton of the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation, Ernie and Gigi Maipid of the Couples for Christ International Council and other Filipino community leaders. Individual admission at the GK Heroes Night is $100 per person. To reserve a seat or to become a table sponsor, please call Vic Lopez at 997-7391 or Arnel Simbulan at 791-9970. Vic Lopez, overall chair of GK Heroes Night in Winnipeg, invites individuals and companies to embrace and support Gawad Kalinga as a direct response to solving the poverty problem in the Philippines. "The Greatness Series and the GK Heroes Night are avenues to bring forth the magnanimity and corporate social responsibility of Filipinos and Canadians alike. This is one perfect opportunity to give back to a country and its people," Lopez said. Former President Fidel V. Ramos is scheduled to meet the Filipino community at a Public Forum to be held at PCCM on October 26 at 1:30 P.M. (not Oct. 27 as originally planned). He will also meet with Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, Premier Gary Doer and PC Leader Hugh McFadyen on October 27.
