The Gawad Kalinga September build kicked off in Cebu City last Aug. 30 with a motorcade from Fuente Osmeña to Gawad Kalinga Amazing Village in Budlaan, barangay Talamban. The event was initiated by the University of San Carlos-Alpha Phi Omega (USC-APO) and USC Supreme Student Council. Lanndon Ocampo, USC-APO president and USC SSC Councilor, said their groups, together with APO national president Mel Adriano, conceptualized the idea of exchanging the paddle with the shovel of GK chairman Tony Meloto. The event was participated by the University of San Carlos, University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Normal University, University of the Philippines Cebu College, Sangguniang Kabataan Cebu Province, Sangguniang Kabataan Cebu City, Couples for Christ-Youth for Christ, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., Young Minds Academy, Accenture and Timawa Adventure Leadership Inc. The month-long build was held in four weekends of September. The groups immersed in GK Hope Village, Mandaue City on Sept. 6-7, GK Liloan from Sept. 13 to 14 and GK Mananga Riverside Village on Sept. 20-21 and 27-28. Themed “Nation building through leadership, friendship and service,” the organizers aimed to change the perception of the youth to someone capable of offering sweat in nation building. Through the “Kabataang Kalinga “ build, four GK sites were improved. Houses were put up, roofed and painted. Wells and septic tanks were dug. Andylita dela Cruz and Paolo Rafael Neri, GK Youth heads Cebu Province, said GK has helped them a lot in personal development. /UP Masscom student Ian Joplin Virrey src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
